My work combines a love of fabric with an artist's sensibility toward color and design. The inspirations for my quilts are as varied as my experiences. A particular fabric may catch my eye and others are selected to coordinate with it. Often I begin with a graphic image in mind and choose the colors and fabrics to suit it. My ideas are influenced by nature, architecture, and patterns from my everyday world, leading me toward nontraditional designs and unconventional color combinations. I often travel with a sketchpad or digital camera to record something that catches my eye.
Beyond piecing together individual fabric shapes, each quilt is a multifaceted creation. Fabrics are chosen not just for color and pattern, but also for the tactile sensations that they offer. I frequently use fabric paints and dyes to create just the fabric I want, rather than relying on commercially available patterns. The quilting itself is used to emphasize the visual impact of the design. All of my works have a strong graphic impact from a distance as well as offering details and nuances to be discovered and enjoyed upon closer inspection.
Special consideration is given to each custom-made quilt. Wall quilts may be designed to be viewed vertically rather than horizontally. Baby quilts can be personalized to record the name and birth date of the baby as well as the occasion and giver of the gift. Bedding is designed to reflect the style and scale of your specific bed as well as your preferences for how you make the bed. Fabrics are chosen to coordinate with your existing colors and finishes. All quilts can be made to your size specifications.
